Establishing Oral Hygiene

Cleaning Your Baby’s Gums and First Teeth

Oral hygiene in babies begins long before the first teeth appear.

Cleaning their gums is essential to prevent bacteria buildup and prepare the way for healthy teeth.

Why is early oral hygiene important?

  1. It helps eliminate bacteria that could affect developing teeth.
  2. Prevents plaque buildup and residue from milk or food.
  3. Accustoms the baby to oral care routines from an early age.

How to clean your baby's gums

After the first teeth appear

Introduce a small toothbrush with soft bristles designed for babies. Apply a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste, about the size of a grain of rice.

Before teeth appear

Use a clean, damp gauze or soft cloth. Gently rub the gums after each feeding to remove residue.

Useful tips:

  1. Clean your baby’s gums twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime.
  2. Avoid sharing spoons or utensils to prevent bacteria transfer.
  3. Constant desire to chew on objects.
